When talking about illustrated books one immediately thinks of the books illustrated by contemporary artists such as Chagall, Léger, Picasso or Matisse and many others, and of the books published by art world celebrities such as Tériade and Ambroise Vollard. Rather than illustrated books these are painters' books.
But one can extend the term illustrated books to past centuries.
We can include the illuminated books of the Middle Ages, which tackle different subjects such as history, the history of the religions, natural sciences, stories and novels, worship, hunting... Those books of the 16th and 17th centuries when handwritten books share the shelf with printed books. Those of the 18th and 19th, which cover various subjects such as botany, theatre...
