Paul Klee (1879-1940)
Paul Klee defined himself as a Painter-Poet. A musician, painter and an art theorist, Klee chose to become a painter in 1914 after travelling in Tunisia. He was associated with the painters of "Der Blaue Reiter" (The Blue Rider) group. After experimenting with cubism, Paul Klee delved into abstract painting and studied the use of colours in watercolours. At the same time, he developed a caricatured drawing style with grotesque and deformed characters. From 1920, he taught at the Bauhaus in Weimar and was later amongst those artists whose works were displayed at the "Degenerate Art" exhibition organised by the Nazis in Munich in 1937.
Paul Klee left captivating Diaries (1898-1918) as well as important theoretical and practical works.
