Le Roi Soleil / The Sun King

" L'État c'est moi ! " aurait-il dit selon la légende. Louis XIV le Grand dit le Roi Soleil, est né à Saint-Germain-en-Laye le 5 septembre 1638, et décédé à Versailles le 1er septembre 1715 ; fils de Louis XIII et d'Anne d'Autriche, roi de France de 1643 à 1715, il fût sacré le 7 juin 1654 à Reims, il choisit pour emblème le Soleil. Le 6 mai 1682, Versailles devient la résidence officielle du roi et de sa cour. Tout y est pensé pour évoquer la puissance royale et symboliser la grandeur. Louis XIV est devenu l'archétype du monarque absolu, son règne de 72 ans fut le plus long de l'histoire de France.

Louis XIV, known as the Sun King, was born in Saint-Germain-en-Laye on 5 September 1638 and passed away at Versailles on 1 September 1715. The son of Louix XIII and Anne of Austria, King of France from 1643 to 1715, he was crowned in Reims on 7 June 1654 and chose the sun as his emblem. On 6 May 1682, Versailles became the official residence of the king and his court. Everything at the château was designed to evoke royal power and grandeur. Louix XIV became the archetype of the absolute monarch and his 72-year reign was the longest in French history.
