L'hiver en peinture / Winter scenes

Les peintres des écoles du nord aimaient représenter les scènes d'hiver. Au coeur d'une nature prise dans la glace ou croulant sous la neige, les hommes affrontent la saison ou bien s'amusent en patinant sur les rivières gelées. Les impressionnistes travaillent sur le monochrome et les effets de lumière produits par la neige. Les empattements de blancs sont irisés par les bleus et la touche est fractionnée. Au XXe siècle, les aplats de blanc se juxtaposent aux couleurs franches et brisent la perspective. De tous temps, les représentations hivernales ont inspiré les artistes. Parfois rudes ou monotones elles évoquent souvent la quiétude et l'apaisement.

Painters from schools in the north liked to portray winter scenes. At the heart of a nature gripped by ice or collapsing under the weight of snow, they depicted people braving the winter elements or enjoying themselves, ice-skating on frozen rivers. The impressionists worked with the monochrome and with the lighting effects created by the snow; the impasto of white is iridescent with touches of blue and broken strokes. In the 20th century, these areas of white were juxtaposed with strong colours, breaking the perspective. Winter scenes have always inspired artists. Although they can sometimes be harsh or monotonous, they often evoke tranquillity and calm.
