Figure haute en couleurs de la deuxième moitié du XIVe siècle, Gaston III de Foix choisit de se faire appeler " Fébus ", c'est à dire " Soleil " et organise lui-même sa légende. C'est un personnage très contrasté, fin politique et administrateur hors pair mais aussi un lettré. Grand lecteur et bibliophile, il doit sa célébrité au Livre de Chasse dont les versions manuscrites illustrées sont nombreuses. Organisée autour d'un ensemble majeur de ces manuscrits grâce aux prêts exceptionnels de la Bibliothèque Nationale, l'exposition évoquera aussi la " librairie " du comte, ses lieux de résidence et le train de vie luxueux de sa "cour d'Orthez".

A colourful figure from the second half of the 14th century, Gaston III of Foix forged his own legend, naming himself "Fébus", meaning "Sun". He was a multifaceted character, a fine politician and outstanding administrator and also a scholar. A great reader and book-lover, Gaston owes his fame to the Livre de Chasse (Book of Hunting), of which numerous illustrated handwritten copies still remain. Centred around a major collection of these manuscripts, brought together thanks to exceptional loans from the Bibliothèque Nationale (French National Library), the exhibition will bring to life the Count's "bookshop", his places of residence and the luxurious lifestyle at his "Court at Orthez".
