La girafe du jardin des plantes / Zarafa the giraffe

Zarafa est un cadeau diplomatique du vice-roi d'Egypte Méhémet Ali à Charles X. Elle est la première girafe vivante à être arrivée sur le sol français. Cette girafe est venue d'Egypte jusqu'à Marseille en bateau le 26 octobre 1826 où elle passe son premier hiver pour s'acclimater. Au printemps suivant, elle, et toute son escorte prennent la route pour Paris. Ce voyage durera six semaines. Arrivée à Paris, elle s'installe dans la ménagerie royale (actuel Jardin des plantes).Son arrivée à la Ménagerie a entraîné une véritable " girafomania ", à l'origine de la création d'objets variés. Elle s'éteindra dix-sept années plus tard (en 1845).Elle a été naturalisée sur une structure en bois. En 1931 le Muséum national d'histoire naturelle fit don de ce spécimen au Muséum d'histoire naturelle de La Rochelle.

Muhammad Ali Pasha, the Viceroy of Egypt, gave Zarafa, the first living giraffe to set foot on French soil, to Charles X as a diplomatic gift. She traveled from Egypt by boat, arriving in Marseilles, where she would spend her first winter in order to acclimatize, on 26 October 1826. The following spring, accompanied by all her entourage, she left for Paris on a journey that would last six weeks. Upon her arrival, Zarafa took up residence in the Royal Menagerie, the modern day Jardin des Plantes, and caused a genuine "giraffomania" resulting in the production of a wide variety of giraffe-related objects. Zarafa died seventeen years later in 1845 and was stuffed and mounted on a wooden frame. In 1931, she was donated to La Rochelle's Natural History Museum by the National Museum of Natural History.
