Balzac,
Un prince de la bohème, 1844
It has been sung, filmed, put into verse, glorified, declared dead a hundred times but has always come back to life, "La Bohème" is a modern-day legend. Through over 200 works of art, from Turner to Corot, from Courbet to Manet, from Van Gogh to Matisse, this exhibition reveals to the general public a side to our culture that remained hidden up to now. It highlights the profound transformation of the status of the artist in the mid 19th century, as well as the fundamental contribution made by nomadic peoples to the construction of the European identity.
