Aussi bien en ville qu'à la campagne, les petits métiers ont fleuri à travers les siècles. Ils témoignent de la capacité des plus modestes à tenter de s'en sortir dans un monde marginal. Au début du XVIème siècle, la chanson de Clément Janequin a immortalisé les fameux cris des marchés de Paris "Voulez ouyr les cris de Paris". Ces marchands ambulants appartiennent à notre mémoire collective à travers le ciméma, la photographie, la littérature et nous rendent nostalgiques d'une époque révolue. "Colporteurs :"Almanach, almanach! Qui n'a pas son bel almanach?" Ramasseur de papiers et chiffons "Oyez mesdames, oyez! Vieux papiers, vieux chiffons, j'achète à bon prix!"

Over the centuries, small trades have flourished both in the city and in the countryside.
