Depuis les premières représentations rigides de donateurs entourés de leurs enfants au 15e siècle, aux mises en scènes chaleureuses des portraits du 18e siècle, l'image familiale a été le témoin de nombreux changements dans sa mise en scène. Au 18e siècle, avec l'aristocratie ; la sphère privée, l'intimité familiale, deviennent des univers explorés par les artistes, donnant ainsi ses lettres de noblesse à l'aspect intime et au culte de la sensibilité. C'est aussi le moment où le point de vue sur l'enfance commence à changer, contribuant ainsi à apporter une vitalité et une liberté dans sa représentation. Au 19e siècle, on découvre alors, le portrait de famille bourgeoise, soucieuse de laisser à la postérité, l'image de sa réussite économique en célébrant le foyer, clé de voute de ce nouveau modèle.

From the first rigid portrayals in the15th century of patrons surrounded by their children, to the hospitable portrait compositions of the 18th century, the family picture was subject to a great many changes in the way it was depicted. In the 18th century, with the aristocracy; the private inner circle and the intimacy of the family became subjects to be explored by artists, thus lending respectability to an intimate regard and to the cult of sensitivity. It was also at this time that childhood began to be looked upon differently, helping to bring a vitality and sense of freedom to its portrayal. The 19th century saw the emergence of portraits of bourgeois families, anxious to leave an image of economic success to posterity, and celebrating the family home, the cornerstone of this new model, to do so.
