Montparnasse

Montparnasse, nom évocateur d'un des quartiers de Paris bordé par le jardin du Luxembourg, flânant entre le 6eme, 14eme et 15eme arrondissement et allant jusqu'aux abords de Saint Germain des Prés; tire son originalité des nombreux artistes qui viennent s'y installer. L'implantation du cimetière du Montparnasse, autour du vieux moulin en 1824, où repose plus d'une centaine de personnalités favorisa l'arrivée, avec dans un premier temps des artisans et sculpteurs d'art funéraire, puis deviendra le repaire des artistes de l'Ecole de Paris tels que Picasso, Foujita, Soutine, Modigliani... pour ne citer qu'eux. Les cafés du Carrefour Vavin, devenus de nos jours mythiques, comme le Dôme, le Sélect, la Coupole... sont l'évocation du passé littéraire et intellectuel de ce quartier, refuge pour la Pensée et l'Art dans les Années 20. Dans les années 60, la gare s'agrandit et la Tour Montparnasse flanquée d'un centre commercial immergea, modernisant ainsi l'image de ce quartier.

Montparnasse (literally the "Mount of Parnassus") is the evocative name of the neighborhood bordering the Luxembourg Gardens, straddling the 6th, 14th and 15th arrondissements and extending to the edge of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. It derives its originality from the many artists who have settled here. The opening of the Montparnasse Cemetery, laid out around an old windmill in 1824 and now the final resting place of more than a hundred famous figures, led to the arrival of craftsmen and sculptors of funerary art. Later they were followed by artists from the Ecole de Paris, including Picasso, Foujita, Soutine and Modigliani, to name just a few. The cafés of Boulevard Montparnasse, like the Dôme, the Sélect and La Coupole, have become legends today, evoking the literary and intellectual past of an area that became a popular refuge for artists and thinkers in the nineteen-twenties. In the sixties the neighborhood was modernized with the expansion of the railway station and the construction of Montparnasse Tower with its adjoining shopping center.
