Dessins français de la collection Mariette (1694-1774)

En amateur éclairé et passionné, Pierre-Jean Mariette (1694-1774) a réuni l'une des collections les plus fascinantes de tout le XVIIIe siècle, dans laquelle le dessin tenait le premier rang avec quelque dix mille feuilles. Les chefs-d'oeuvre des grands artistes y côtoyaient les morceaux de bravoure des petits maîtres, suivant une volonté encyclopédique assumée par ce " touche-à-tout de génie ". De grands historiens d'art ont relevé le défi vertigineux de reconstituer cette collection mythique en traquant les dessins ayant appartenu à Mariette dans les collections publiques et privées du monde entier. A l'occasion de la publication des deux premiers volumes, le Louvre organise une exposition.

An enlightened and passionate amateur, Pierre-Jean Mariette (1694-1774) created one of the most fascinating collections of the entire 18th century, consisting of around ten thousand individual works, in which drawing took centre stage. Masterpieces by the great artists are displayed alongside the artistic equivalent of "purple prose" by minor masters, following the encyclopaedic approach adopted by this "brilliant jack-of-all-trades and master of many". Several major art historians took up the daunting challenge of reconstructing this legendary collection, tracking down drawings that used to belong to Mariette in public and private collections all over the world. The Louvre Museum has organised an exhibition to mark the publication of the first two volumes.
