Le Musée national de Port-Royal des Champs

Le Musée national de Port-Royal des Champs réunit le site des Granges de Port-Royal et celui de l'ancienne abbaye de Port-Royal des Champs fondée au début du XIIIe siècle et rasée en 1710. Le musée, installé dans le bâtiment des Petites Ecoles où Racine fût élève, retrace l'histoire du Jansénisme, mouvement religieux du XVIIe siècle incarné par les religieuses de Port-Royal autour de la Mère Angélique et d'un certain nombre d'hommes : "les Solitaires", qui ont crée des courants spirituels, littéraires et artistiques dont le retentissement marque la société jusqu'à nos jours.

The Musée national de Port-Royal des Champs encompasses the site of the Granges de Port-Royal and that of the ancient abbey of Port-Royal des Champs built in the 13th century and razed to the ground in 1710. The museum building at one time housed a renowned elementary school, the "Petites Ecoles", which counted the French playwright Racine amongst its pupils. The exhibition retraces the history of Jansenism, a religious movement of the 17th century upheld and supported by the nuns of Port-Royal under the direction of the Abbess Angélique and a group of laymen known as "les Solitaires" ("the Hermits"), who gave rise to spiritual, literary and artistic currents that have left a mark on society to this day.
