En bois, en plastique, en métal, en osier, assise ajourée ou pleine, dossier haut ou bas, étroit ou large, la chaise fait partie du simple ordinaire. L'homme y recherche le repos, le confort de travail ou la pose, et l'animal, en prenant de la hauteur, y trouve tranquillité et abri des courants d'air. Simple, pratique, ornée, confortable, tarabiscotée, chantournée, sculptée, design, esthétique. Elle allie le fonctionnel et parfois l'esthétique. La chaise sert aussi parfois de support, de table d'appoint, d'objet d'acrobatie, d'accessoires de photographe. Assis de face, à califourchon, de côté, son absence d'accoudoir permet un usage multiple et détourné. Chaise d'extérieur, d'atelier, de bureau, de salle à manger, elle est partout dans la maison, indispensable et pourtant parfois reléguée.
