Humanitarian aid post 1914-18
The First World War was not only a bloody war it was also very violent. Countless towns and villages were decimated by shell fire. We have all seen photos depicting the movement of civilian populations, constantly seeking to relocate as far away as possible from the battle fields. Before 1917, the year in which the United States entered into the war, groups of American volunteers were mobilised to assist the civilian populations affected by the conflict in Europe. Numerous humanitarian organisations were created, such as the American Volunteer Group, the American Rescue Committee etc. Their activities became rapidly effective as soon as the war ended in 1918. They made every effort to provide assistance in all sectors of civilian life, including reconstruction, health and education.
