The 850th anniversary of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris
In 2013, Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris will celebrate its 850th anniversary.
Maurice de Sully became Bishop of Paris in 1160 and, after his enthronement, decided to give the capital a monumental cathedral. It was to be located on the Île de la Cité and the first stone was laid in 1163.Maurice de Sully's successors, Eudes de Sully, Guillaume d'Auvergne and Simon Matifas de Buci ensured work continued on the building until it was finally completed in 1330.
