Tea at Guimet - Tales of an ancient drink
Tea at Guimet - Tales of an ancient drink

Exhibition at the musée Guimet from 3 October 2012 to 7 January 2013

Today a universal drink and undoubtedly the most popular beverage in the world, tea was born in China under the Tang dynasty.
The first teas arrived in Europe in 1610, aboard the ships of the Dutch East India Company and by 1636 it had been introduced into France.
Gathering together for a cup of tea represented a pleasant moment of refined relaxation and conviviality.
Progressively, this beverage, following the example of wine connoisseurs, inspired the creation of tea clubs, where tea waiters would teach enthusiasts the art of tasting and appreciating the finesse of its flavours and aromas, whether it was for the traditional English five o'clock tea, for the Japanese tea ceremony (cha dô) -a ritual extensively codified by great tea masters such as Sen Rikyu (1522-1591), where tea tasting was carried out like a veritable exercise in meditation,- or the Chinese art of "gongfu cha ".
