Gabriel Loppé (1825-1913)
Gabriel Loppé (1825-1913)

Gabriel Loppé began his career as a landscape artist before discovering a passion for photography. His favourite subjects included family scenes, which immortalised his own grandchildren's games as well as urban views, which he was one of the first to photograph. He was particularly interested in the cities of London and Paris (the Eiffel Tower, the department stores, the quays), where he took night shots, revealing urban landscapes enhanced by street lighting. His work is reminiscent of the English pictorialist movement. As 2013 marks the 100th anniversary of his death, we invite you to rediscover his work through this selection.
Photographs by this artist can also be found on Arago, web portal of the French photography.
