Marcel Carné (1906-1996)
Marcel Carné, who was born in Paris on 18th August 1906 and passed away at Clamart on the 31st October 1996, is known as one of the greatest French film directors, being the first film maker to be elected to the French Institute's Académie des Beaux Arts, and winning many international awards for his films. Throughout his long career of almost seventy years, he remained true to his aim to: "create films that he believed in." Carné's films are characterised by the perfection of his images, his technical mastery and his ability to transform the mundane into the extraordinary.
A public showing of Marcel Carné's personal archive purchased by the French Film Archive at the beginning of 2009 is planned for 2010.
