Cameras

The principle of the dark room has been known since ancient times. But it was not until the 19th century that Nicéphore Niepce succeeded in producing a fixed photographic image. In partnership with Daguerre, he designed the first camera capable of producing a stable image, which was marketed in 1839 under the name Daguerreotype. But the first Daguerreotype cameras with stands were heavy and difficult to handle. The exposure time could take up to twenty minutes! But developments in optics and chemistry resulted in the design of new, easily transportable photographic apparatus. Initially reserved for use by professionals or enlightened amateurs, the camera became more widely used over the course of the 20th century, and has now become, with the advent of the digital era and its integration into the mobile phone, an everyday object in our world centred on imagery.
