1914-1918: "Into the Heat of Battle"
Into the Heat of Battle
Into the Heat of Battle
"Advance!" After an interminable wait, this command was the signal for the "poilus", the French soldiers of the Great War, to rush out of their trenches and launch themselves into the heat of battle. From hand-to-hand fighting, gas attacks and cavalry charges, to tanks and heavy artillery, these clashes were brutal and relentless, and all to gain just a few square kilometres of land. Four years of alternating back and forth between trench and mobile warfare, destroying both men and land in the process.
