Impressionism and fashion
At the Musée d'Orsay [Orsay Museum] from 25 September 2012 to 20 January 2013.
At the start of the 1860s, fashion became a very popular subject with artists as well as a symbol of modernity. From the end of the Second Empire to the start of the Third Republic, painters tried to convey the metamorphoses of their world, that was undergoing great changes. Paintings depicted clothing in the context of everyday life, revealed the customs of the day and documented the history of women. The interconnections between painting and literature, in addition to the influence of fashion plates and photography, are factors that played a major role in the Impressionist revolution.
