François Clouet
François Clouet

François Clouet was born sometime between 1505 and 1510, son of Jean Clouet, from whom he inherited the position of portrait artist at the French court. Little is known about his life. Only two signed works exist: Portrait of Paul Quthe and A Lady in Her Bath, thought to be Gabrielle d'Estrée (the Musée de Condé holds a copy) He is most likely the artist who painted the official royal portraits (Henri II). Roughly fifty drawings by Clouet are held in various museums, some of them at the Musée Condé de Chantilly. He died around 1572 after painting the portraits of all the key figures at the courts of François I, Henri II and Charles IX.
