Theatres and music halls

From the Folies Bergères to the Opéra Garnier, theatres and music halls put their stages at the disposal of artists of all kinds. The audience come together to laugh, cry, be moved or entertained by the events on stage. These public buildings are sometimes the symbols of districts or cities where the architects have strived to make them not only functional but also quite simply beautiful and an integral part of the urban landscape. As such the Paris Opera (also known as the Opéra Garnier) remains symbolic of a period when Haussmann's Paris was adorning itself with modern and majestic monuments and became a shining light over all of Europe.
