Roger Parry in Tahiti
Roger Parry in Tahiti

In 1932, Roger Parry, then 26 years old, left Marseille headed for Papeete. He arrived on 18 May and remained on Tahiti and the islands for two months. He took hundreds of photographs, made a film and drew several satirical drawings that reveal his sense of humour.

Roger Parry's photographs show Tahiti and the islands as they were before the growth of the tourist industry. They were published in 1934 in the work "Tahiti", in collaboration with Malraux,
"There is no romance, no trickery in Tahiti in the 1930s. Roger Parry's vision embraces that of his subjects. (…) Roger Parry slips into these people's world without the slightest voyeurism and their interior lives triumph, just as dreams triumph over the unconscious." [literal translation]
