The Liberation of Paris
The Liberation of Paris

"An ocean! (...) as far as the eye can see it is a living tide of people in the sun, beneath the French flag!" [literal translation] exclaimed Charles de Gaulle on 26 August 1944 during the parade upon the Liberation of Paris, according to his Mémoires.

The uprising in Paris in August 1944 began the rout of the occupying German forces in the French capital. After a week of bitter fighting, the Germans and their allies fled before the stubborn French resistors and the rapid approach of the Allied forces. And thus on 25 August a joyful, jubilant crowd welcomed the Allies to a newly liberated Paris.
