The Reformation began in Germany on 31 October 1517. The preacher Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses against indulgences on the doors of Wittenberg’s Castle Church to protest against the indulgences granted by Pope Leon X to those helping to build the new St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. The theses quickly went into print and Luther's ideas spread throughout Europe, leading to excommunications, bloody and civil wars, exile and fragile religious freedom. Almost five hundred years later, here is a chance to look back at the birth of the Reformation.
