Guéret Museum of Art and Archaeology
Guéret Museum of Art and Archaeology

Created in 1832 by the Société des Sciences Naturelles et Archéologiques de la Creuse, the Musée d'Art et d'Archéologie de Guéret is housed in the Hôtel de la Sénatorerie (the residence of senators under Napoléon I) and reflects the eclecticism of the donors. Truly multidisciplinary, in addition to the natural history room established in 1832, it also contains a magnificent collection of mediaeval enamels from the Limousin, an Egyptian antiquities department and Gallo-Roman objects, as well as a rich Asian collection with beautiful Chinese ceramics. The paintings include remarkable works by Eustache Lesueur, Alexandre François Desportes, Ary Scheffer, Maurice Leloir, Odilon Redon, Jules Pascin and Moïse Kisling. One room is devoted to painters from the Creuse Valley: Eugène Alliaud, Armand Guillaumin, Paul Madeline and Anders Osterlind.
