Le musée du Pays Châtillonnais, en Côte d'Or, présente l'une des plus importantes découvertes archéologiques jamais réalisées en France : la tombe de Vix
The Treasure of Vix, Musée du Pays Châtillonnais
The Treasure of Vix, Musée du Pays Châtillonnais

In 1953, the grave of an Iron Age princess who had been buried in a four-wheeled chariot was uncovered in Vix. The grave contained a mysterious lady, accompanied on her final journey by extraordinarily opulent grave offerings. This tomb containing numerous Mediterranean items constitutes valuable evidence of the large number of trade links between the Gauls and the inhabitants of the Mediterranean at that time. The masterpiece of the Vix Treasure is an exceptional hammered bronze volute krater, which was probably used to prepare drinks that accompanied religious ceremonies. The Vix krater is the largest known vessel from the ancient world.
