The Way of the Cross by Gustave Moreau, Notre-Dame de Decazeville
In 1862, Elie Cabrol, a Decazeville industrialist, commissioned the artist to paint the fourteen Stations of the Cross, to be hung on the walls of the town's new church. This type of work, often executed in a specialised workshop, is not typical of Moreau, since he did not specialise in religious painting. However, because of the diverse influences they reveal, these canvases herald the new style that Moreau went on to adopt.
