The artist in the Studio
The artist in the Studio

"The scene is set in a Paris studio" (Courbet to Champfleury in 1854).
The studio is the space where the artist paints, stores the tools of his trade, sketches and finished works and welcomes models, students and friends. The art dealer also visits the artist there, accompanied by art aficionados and clients alike.
Many artists, such as Courbet, Picasso, Bazille and Gauguin, have depicted their studios in a number of celebrated paintings where you can often see them portrayed in front of their easels with brush and palette in hand.
If the artist prefers painting from life, analysing variations in light and using nature as a model, the studio is reduced to a folding easel, umbrella and paint box.
From simple lofts with large windows to large private townhouses and shared buildings, there are a great many types of studios in Paris, some of the more famous being the Bateau-Lavoir, Cité Fleurie and La Ruche, and still others like the former Delacroix or Gustave Moreau studios, which have been converted into museums.
