Regarded as one of the greatest French engravers, Auguste Lepère renewed a taste for woodcuts and wood engravings made with a knife, opening the way to Félix Valloton, Henri Rivière and Paul Gauguin.

He also produced many paintings and participated actively in L'Estampe originale and L’Image reviews.
