Slogans from May 1968
Slogans from May 1968
Beyond the barricades, meetings, student protests and factory occupations, the slogans of May 1968 are a powerful expression of the revolutionary spirit of the period. They reflect the spirit of revolt, political opposition to society and authority, and the renewed need to use language to radically change the world and find answers: “Changer la vie, changer la société” (“Change your life, change society”), “Sous les pavés, la plage” (“Under the cobblestones, the beach”).
These words became weapons—“Ce n'est qu'un début, continuons le combat” (“This is just the beginning, the fight continues”)—and fifty years on they ensure the legend and spirit of 1968 live on.
