Jeanne Moreau (1928-2017)
Jeanne Moreau (1928-2017)
Jeanne Moreau, a politically engaged French actress and singer who featured in over 130 films, would have celebrated her 90th birthday in January 2018.
Born in Paris in 1928, she attended the Conservatoire de Paris, took part in the first Avignon Festival and became a resident actress at the Comédie Française, before quitting in 1952. She won her first film roles in the early 1950s and worked with leading directors from Luis Buñuel to Wim Wenders, including François Truffaut, Orson Welles and Roger Vadim.
Her background enabled her to take on strong characters that sometimes challenged the morals of the time, which suited her off-screen life as a liberated woman.
With a career spanning over 60 years, she played opposite the very greatest actors of her era.
