France liberated
France liberated
Supported by French Resistance fighters, the Allies landed on the beaches of Normandy on 6 June 1944. This event marked the beginning of the liberation of France, which had been occupied by German forces since 1940. Joy and jubilation, as well as public condemnation gradually spread across the country. The signing of the armistice on 8 May 1945 marked the end of the war and the start of Germany's occupation by Soviet troops and Allied forces. Traumatized and in ruins, Europe faced the task of rebuilding.
