Baron Gérard Museum of Art and History in Bayeux
Baron Gérard Museum of Art and History in Bayeux

The former episcopal palace of Bayeux, the oldest parts of which date back to the 11th century, houses the collections of the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire Baron Gérard, MAHB [Baron Gérard Museum of Art and History] . Devoted both to the history of the city and to fine arts, with works ranging from the Italian and Flemish Primitives to Impressionism, the museum was named after its generous benefactor, Henri-Alexandre Gérard, Deputy of Bayeux and heir of the painter François Gérard. The collection of paintings develops around contemporaries of the great master, François Gérard, who painted “Hylas and the nymph”: Jacques-Louis David, Antoine-Jean Gros and Robert Lefèvre. The museum contains exceptional works such as, “ La Vierge à la grappe” [“The Virgin of the grapes”] by Philippe de Champaigne, “La cage aux oiseaux” [“The Birdcage”] by François Boucher and “Portraits à la campagne” [“Portraits in the country”] by Gustave Caillebotte.
