William Shakespeare
William Shakespeare

Four centuries later, William Shakespeare (1564-1616) is still regarded as the greatest writer in the English language. Whilst his private life remains a mystery, we know that in 23 years, he wrote 37 plays. His comedies and tragedies strikingly express the full spectrum of emotions. His works also inspired various artists and his characters are immortal: Romeo and Juliette, Hamlet and Ophelia, Othello and Desdemona, King Lear and Lady Macbeth. Last year, to mark the 450th anniversary of the birth of Shakespeare, the Musée Delacroix exhibited a display of lithographic stones designed by the artist, including the "Hamlet" series.
The famous quote from Hamlet "To be or not to be : that is the question" still resounds within us but we might also like to contemplate the following extract from Julius Caesar : "The evil that men do lives after them ; The good is oft interred with their bones".
