Louis XIV, warrior king
Louis XIV, warrior king

"I loved war too much", such, reportedly, were the words of the Sun King on his deathbed.
Although the reign of Louis XIV began with the Peace of the Pyrenees, which ended the conflict between France and Spain, it did not take the King long, after the death of Mazarin, to reopen hostilities. From the Franco-Spanish conflict to a whole Europe united against France, the nation of the Sun King was more often at war than peace. The heroic scenes by Parrocel and van der Meulen and the many depictions of battles reflect the Monarch’s political ambitions which led him to expand the borders of the kingdom, annexing the major cities of the north or the Franche-Comté.
