Abd al-Qadir
Abd al-Qadir

Abd al-Qadir, a religious leader and a great solider, is a leading figure in Algerian history. He was declared Amir in 1832 and as such led the military resistance against the French colonial army until the capture of the "smala", the travelling capital of Abd al-Qadir, in 1843 by the Duke of Aumale.
Founder of a modern, humanist and mystical state, he worked tirelessly to reconcile East-West relations and for dialogue between cultures and religions.
