Louvre Museum – Department of Sculptures
Louvre Museum – Department of Sculptures
Since as long ago as the Ancien Régime, the Louvre has housed a collection of medieval and modern sculptures. During the Restoration, the collection expanded to include some of the works from the former Musée des Monuments Français, collected by Alexandre Lenoir in 1795. A determined policy of voluntary collection and acquisition led to the creation of the independent Department of Sculptures was created in 1893. Today the Louvre features a wide panorama of French and European sculpture from the Middle Ages to 1848.
