Fontainebleau: Museum and Château
Surrounded by a large park adjoining the forest, the Château de Fontainebleau was a royal residence from
François I to Napoleon III. Continuously embellished by the kings, it is France’s only example of a residence
inhabited for a full eight centuries. Lavishly decorated apartments bring to life the greatest moments in the
history of this royal residence, which today is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The château makes it possible to trace the evolution of the most significant styles since the 16th century,
including unique collections of woodwork, stucco, Renaissance paintings, carved wooden ceilings and paints
from the 17th and 18th centuries and apartments with furnishings dating back to the First Empire.
