The story in black and white
Gisèle Freund fled Nazi Germany in 1933 and sought refuge in Paris. Earning her living by covering stories for magazines and journals, these years represented a period of training for her. She never forgot it was sociology that first led her to photography, later commenting that "photography is a mirror of our history." Consequently, there followed a series of reportages, including Old Paris in 1933, the International Writers' Congress for the Defence of Culture in 1935, and economic depression in the north of England, which appeared in Life Magazine on 14 December 1936.
