Louis de Boullogne (1654-1733)
Louis de Boullogne (1654-1733)

First painter to the King. The generation of French artists born towards the middle of the 17th century was for so long overshadowed by the outstanding role played by Charles Le Brun (born in 1619) and the voluptuous charm of François Boucher (born in 1703). As a consequence they remain relatively unknown.
Louis de Boullogne (1654-1733) was born into a family of painters. He was representative of the generation of artists that was trained by the new Académie de peinture et de sculpture, whose highest functions he would later occupy. His fluid and elegant style brilliantly made the transition from the period described as "Classic" to the Rococo. Not the least of his talents he was also a marvelous drawer.
