Lily of the Valley
Lily of the Valley

As it flowers in May, the Lily of the Valley is the ultimate spring flower and traditionally brings good luck. According to the language of flowers, the Lily of the Valley represents a "return to happiness"… It is said that destiny will smile particularly favourably on anyone who finds a sprig of Lily of the Valley with 13 bells!
The flower originated in Japan where it symbolises revival and despite an appearance associated with pure whiteness and innocence, it is poisonous.
The tradition of offering Lily of the Valley on May 1 dates back to the Renaissance and its enduring reputation as a good luck charm began under the reign of Charles IX. We have Claude François de Payan, a friend of Robespierre, to thank for the sale of the flowers on the street as it is done today.
