Eugène Druet et Rodin, the fonds Vizzavona
Eugène Druet et Rodin, the fonds Vizzavona

After meeting Auguste Rodin in 1896, Eugène Druet became the official photographer of, the artist, who had been won over by his prints. Druet had designed an extremely effective process that allowed him to take close ups of a work of art, guaranteeing a faithful rendering of the work's contours and the intrinsic value of the sculpture. At the time, the critic, Claude Anet, wrote that his photographs "reproduced not only all the delicacy of the contours, the beauty of the surfaces and the lines... [but also] ...the evocative force of the works themselves..." The two men worked in unison, but the sculptor proved to be dominating and demanding. The glass photo plates were signed by both men. Although their partnership gradually deteriorated, Druet had Rodin to thank for his introduction into artistic circles, the opening of his gallery and the creation of a type of photographic agency for works of art, now known as the Fonds Druet-Vizzavona.
