vignon School

Ever since the Popes settled in Avignon, the city has attracted artists from all around; from the North, from Spain and from neighbouring Piedmont. Three generations of painters, such as Enguerrand Quarton, Josse Lieferinxe, Nicolas Dipre and many others who remain anonymous, combined Dutch and Italian influences and contributed to the creation of an original centre of painting known as the Avignon School. Compositions of monumental simplicity, geometric volumes and forms, bold colours, a pure palette and bright direct light epitomise the predominant style of their work.
