Sovereign destinies.
Exhibitions at the Château de Compiègne and the Château de Malmaison, from 23 September 2011 to 9 January 2012.
The Palace of Compiègne invites us to discover its exhibition on the exceptional destiny of three sovereigns: Napoleon I, the King of Sweden and Alexander I.
Rivals, allies and finally enemies, these three historical figures strongly influenced early 19th-century Europe. The second part of the exhibition, housed at the Château de Malmaison, is dedicated to Empress Joséphine, Sweden and Russia, and highlights the dynastic relations established between Joséphine's descendants, the Romanov dynasty and the ruling family of Sweden. In particular, one can discover an exceptional collection of luxurious decorative objects, testifying to the influence of the Empire style, including a dessert set designed by the Dihl et Guerhard workshops for Joséphine and her son Eugène.
These two exhibitions gather together prestigious works from the National museum of Stockholm, various royal Swedish collections and the Hermitage Museum of Saint Petersburg.
