Léonard Limosin (1505-1577)
The Musée National de la Renaissance is exhibiting a set of painted enamels which form part of an ornamental series conceived by Leonard Limosin and inspired by Ovid's poem "Heroides". The plaques were originally intended to decorate a paneled cabinet but the person who commissioned them remains unknown. The artist chose to present his subject - mythical couples from Antiquity - in the form of refined portraits with striking and remarkably expressive features, on a vivid blue background. It is a wonderful opportunity to discover one of the outstanding artists of the French Renaissance: Leonard Limosin (1505-1577), enameller to the King and a master of portraits in painted enamel.
