Normandy and History

Near and yet distant, land of sea and earth, industry and art... To mark the second "Normandy Impressionist" festival, which will take place across the region from April to September 2013, and to chase away the last of the winter chills, we invite you to rediscover Normandy with a selection of images from our collections. Densely populated since Neolithic times, plundered by the Vikings, seat of a powerful duchy at the heart of the struggle between England and France throughout the Middle Ages, major centre of Renaissance art, holiday resort in the 19th century turned battlefield during the Second World War, this highly-individual region boasts many important historical and heritage sites. It has been a magnet for artists, drawn there by its contrasting charms. Why not combine a selection of our images to create your own unique travel guide?
