Armistice 11 November 1918
Armistice 11 November 1918

The Armistice signed on 11 November 1918 brought an end to the First World War (1914-1918) which left more than eight million dead and six million disabled. The German and Allied generals met in Maréchal (Field Marshall) Foch's specially converted railway carriage, in the clearing of Rethondes in the forest of Compiègne. As the Armistice was only provisional (originally lasting 36 days), the Treaty of Versailles signed in 1919, officially confirmed the end of the war. It was not until 1920 that the Unknown Solider buried beneath the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, was honoured in remembrance of the unknown dead of the First World War.
