Japanese photography

This year Japan will be the guest of honour at Paris Photo, to be held from 13 to 16 November.
Photographic techniques were introduced early in Japan which underwent an exceptional period of development thanks to Western presence in the country. In the 19th century Japan viewed photography as an intrusion of Western imagery but also as a medium of the modern era. This rapid assimilation of European visual culture given the historical context of the country, and the juxtaposition of traditional versus modern or of full versus empty epitomizes Japanese photography.
